Notes on magic in Bokura no Kiseki mostly for my own reference. Potential spoilers.
  • magic uses spirits found all around in leaves, stone, flowers, water
  • words are needed to summon the spirit in question, basically a "lend me your strength" kind of thing
    • the words needed will differ based on the spirit being summoned
  • Contract must first be made for magic to be used
    • One person can have multiple contracts
    • Only priests have the jurisdiction to make contracts for others
    • Fusing of a spirit (also been called "dead soul") to yours
    • souls of peasants are apparently incompatible with magic (which is why servants cannot form contracts at all??)
  • magic needs sacrifice as exchange: blood, nails, hair, skin, claws, milk teeth, teeth, umbilical cord
    • rare to use fresh blood
      • magic using the blood of royalty
      • no one knows about it?
      • records of this would have been burned
      • can only be used by the class of people who are commanders of the knight groups
      • much more powerful
      • more common a few hundred years ago but later banned by the church because it resulted in civilian's bodies being sold (slave trade, Glen)
      • does not have to be the caster's own blood
    • priests grow out their eyebrows and beard if they go bald for 'parts'
    • sacrifice must be fresh!
      • the power of sacrifices weaken once they have left the body for too long
      • old stuff can only be used for distraction (usually a day old)
      • magic done using fresh sacrifices have the ability to kill
    • kind of sacrifice depends on what kind of magic
    • knights and squires carry fakes into battle so the enemy can't use your tools against you
  • Types of Magic
    • what kind of magic you can use depends on your status
    • nobility possesses special magic passed down within their family
    • Royal Magic: Veronica has the ability to reflect back any and all magic aimed at her. This is different from the magic used by priests that can nullify magic once. (Shield magic??)
      • only the pope, high priest and a small group of other priests know about Royal magic
    • Healing Magic: Priest-only
      • Price can be paid in blood
      • Cannot be used on yourself (why?)
      • must use it on other clergymen (what happens when you use it on someone that isn't clergymen?)
  • magic tires you out if you aren't trained to use it over and over
  • if you get your chants and sacrifices wrong will it negatively impact the strength of your magic??
  • The First Murder in Human History
    • similar to Cain and Abel
    • magic was given to help people live their lives but two brothers working the land had a dispute and the elder killed the younger, marking the first time magic had been used to kill someone
    • God did not pass judgement on the older brother because giving magic to man had been a sin in the first place (since if there had been no magic maybe the younger would not have died?)
    • Those killed by magic are reborn (because God takes the responsibility for it? For giving magic?)
    • To pay respect to enemy generals and royalty, a knight's code of honor dictates that they must kill them with magic
    • sinners will not be reincarnated, so magic is never used for an execution of a criminal, etc.
    • BUT you are not supposed to keep your memories when you reincarnate and contracts and magic should also be reset after you reincarnate
